Endocrinologists apply the idea of feedback loops to explain how hormones regulate certain bodily functions such as glucose metabolism. In particular, feedback loops focus on the maintenance of the plasma concentrations of glucose within a narrow range. Here, we put forward a different, organicist perspective on the endocrine regulation of glycaemia, by relying on the pivotal concept of closure of constraints. From this perspective, biological systems are understood as organized ones, which means that they are constituted of a set of (...) mutually dependent functional structures acting as constraints, whose maintenance depends on their reciprocal interactions. Closure refers specifically to the mutual dependence among functional constraints in an organism. We show that, when compared to feedback loops, organizational closure can generate much richer descriptions of the processes and constraints at play in the metabolism and regulation of glycaemia, by making explicit the different hierarchical orders involved. We expect that the proposed theoretical framework will open the way to the construction of original mathematical models, which would provide a better understanding of endocrine regulation from an organicist perspective. Online education has become an essential component of education. Thus, several factors, such as the student’s learning strategy and motivation, generally contribute to their academic success. This study investigates the relationship between learning strategies, motivation, and online learning environment among 150 first-year college students. Employing correlational design, the statistical findings of the study reveal that the r coefficient of 0.59 indicates a moderate positive correlation between the variables. The p-value of 0.00, which is less than 0.05, leads to the decision (...) to reject the null hypothesis. Introduction: Traditionally, empathy has been studied from two main perspectives: the theory-theory approach and the simulation theory approach. These theories claim that social emotions are fundamentally constituted by mind states in the brain. In contrast, classical phenomenology and recent research based on enactive theories consider empathy as the basic process of contacting others’ emotional experiences through direct bodily perception and sensation. Objective: This study aims to enrich knowledge of the empathic experience of pain by using an experimental phenomenological method. Method: (...) Implementing an experimental paradigm used in affective neuroscience, we exposed 28 healthy adults to a video of sportspersons suffering physical accidents while practicing extreme sports. Immediately after watching the video, each participant underwent a phenomenological interview to gather data on embodied, multi-layered dimensions (bodily sensations, emotions, and motivations) and temporal aspects of empathic experience. We also performed quantitative analyses of the phenomenological categories. Results: Experiential access to the other person’s painful experience involves four main-themes. Bodily resonance: participants felt a multiplicity of bodily, affective, and kinesthetic sensations. Attentional focus: some participants centered their attention more on their own personal discomfort and sensations of rejection, while others on the pain and suffering experienced by the sportspersons. Kinesthetic motivation: some participants experienced the feeling in their bodies to avoid or escape from watching the video, while others experienced the need to help the sportspersons avoid suffering any injury while practicing extreme sports. Temporality of experience: participants witnessed temporal fluctuations in their experiences, bringing intensity changes in their bodily resonance, attentional focus, and kinesthetic motivation. Finally, two experiential structures were found: one structure is self-centered empathic experience, characterized by bodily resonance, attentional focus centered on the participant’s own experience of seeing the sportsperson suffering, and self-protective kinesthetic motivation; the other structure is other-centered empathic experience, characterized by bodily resonance, attentional focus centered on the sportsperson, and prosocial kinesthetic motivation to help them. Discussion: We show how phenomenological data may contribute to comprehending empathy for pain in social neuroscience. In addition, we address the phenomenological aspect of the enactive approach to the three dimensions of embodiment of human consciousness, especially the intersubjective dimension. Also, based on our results, we suggest an extension of the enactive theory for non-interactive social experience. (shrink)

This article aims to theoretically analyse so-called character friendship from the perspective of emotions. From this angle, our research enables us to distinguish different types of emotions, and we propose a conceptual model of the hierarchy of the emotions of character friendship and their influence on social behaviour. With this model in hand, the article discusses whether other-oriented emotions fully explain the emotional underpinnings of character friendship. We find other-oriented emotions to be ambiguous because they may or may not be (...) selfless. Thus we question whether these emotions can adequately explain the bonding content of character friendship. We conclude that there is a higher affective tier related to moral emotions and moral behaviour, which we have labelled the ‘bonding feeling’. This feeling is described with reference to its historical precedents (Rof Carballo’s ‘affective warp’), thus explaining its particularity. (shrink)

En su libro "La primavera silenciosa" acusaba del deterioro ambiental al poder ilimitado del ser humano. La creencia surgida en la modernidad de que todo lo que el hombre decidía era en sí mismo lo mejor por haber sido fruto de una voluntad libérrima, daba primacía y legitimidad absoluta a su acción sobre la naturaleza. Surgieron con gran fuerza numerosos grupos (...) ecologistas que adoptaron un pensamiento que responde al nombre de "ecología profunda" o "Deep Ecology" descrito por primera vez por Arme Naess en un artículo publicado por la revista Inquiry y titulado "The Shallow and the Deep, Long Range Ecology Movement". Los principios que proponía este movimiento (Naess 1984) pueden ser resumidos en ocho grandes puntos: 1) la vida de los seres no humanos es un valor en sí: 2) la riqueza y la diversidad de estas formas de vida son también valores en sí; 3) los seres humanos no pueden intervenir de manera destructiva en la vida; 4) a este respecto, la intervención humana actual es eminentemente excesiva; 5) por consiguiente, las reglas de juego deben ser radicalmente modificadas; 6) esta modificación radical debe hacerse tanto a nivel de las estructuras económicas como de las estructuras ideológicas y culturales; 7) a nivel ideológico, el cambio principal consiste en apreciar más la calidad de la vida que el goce de los bienes materiales; 8) las personas que acepten estos principios tienen la obligación de contribuir, directa o indirectamente a la realización de los cambios fundamentales que aquellos implican. Estamos siendo testigos de grandes avances tecnológicos y, a la vez, de grandes desastres naturales y sociales que nos impulsan a plantearnos cuáles son las causas últimas de la degradación natural ecológica. El abuso en el uso de los recursos tal vez pueda tener relación con el abuso en el uso de la tecnología; incluso ser causa de la gran desigualdad social en el acceso a bienes necesarios para llevar una vida digna, raíz de muchos conflictos sociales. La ecología es (...) una disciplina científica, pero cada vez es más habitual ampararse en este término para lanzar opiniones o generar un debate de ideologías de índole catastrofista que no hacen más que generar malestar social sin visos de solución práctica. Las reflexiones sobre la ecología nos parece que deben plantearse de una forma interdisciplinar, pero no de cualquier manera, sino respetando el estatuto epistemológico de cada área del saber. Cuidar el método científico, en el ámbito científico; el filosófico, en el suyo propio; e incluso el teológico. El tema de nuestra relación con la naturaleza nos afecta tan íntimamente que casi todas las áreas del conocimiento pueden decir algo al respecto. En el presente trabajo comenzamos ese diálogo y presentamos las ideas básicas desde las que se podría plantear un modo de actuar humano respetuoso para con los demás hombres y los demás seres de la naturaleza, que mejore nuestro modo de vivir y evite más daños y perjuicios. A esto nos referimos cuando hablamos de “ética ambiental”. La ecología nos toca de cerca porque tiene que ver con el modo de habitar nuestro mundo y las relaciones que tenemos con los demás seres vivos y no vivos. A fin de poder delinear las líneas principales de una ética orientada al medioambiente es preciso, en primer lugar, conocer los datos científicos sobre el tema; en segundo lugar, analizar los problemas graves que se están detectando y comprender que muchas de sus causas todavía son desconocidas y precisan de un estudio más detenido; finalmente, es conveniente revisar las alternativas de solución que nos orienten a llevar una vida mejor, donde se sugieran modos de obrar que no nos cierren el camino hacia ese destino común que tenemos como seres humanos, y que integre al resto de criaturas porque no somos los únicos seres vivientes del planeta. La propuesta de una “ética ambiental” apunta a considerar un verdadero “ecologismo solidario”. (shrink)

Is the societal-level of analysis sufficient today to understand the values of those in the global workforce? Or are individual-level analyses more appropriate for assessing the influence of values on ethical behaviors across country workforces? Using multi-level analyses for a 48-society sample, we test the utility of both the societal-level and individual-level dimensions of collectivism and individualism values for predicting ethical behaviors of business professionals. Our values-based behavioral analysis indicates that values at the individual-level make a more significant contribution to (...) explaining variance in ethical behaviors than do values at the societal-level. Implicitly, our findings question the soundness of using societal-level values measures. Implications for international business research are discussed. (shrink)

The precarious rights of senior citizens, especially those who are highly educated and who are expected to counsel and guide the younger generations, has stimulated the creation internationally of advocacy associations and opinion leader groups. The strength of these groups, however, varies from country to country. In some countries, they are supported and are the focus of intense interest; in others, they are practically ignored. For this is reason we believe that the creation of a network of all these associations (...) is essential. The proposed network would act as a support for the already-existing policies of the United Nations’ High Commission for Human Rights, of independent experts, and of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People. All three have long ago recommended the creation of a recognized instrument for uniting presently scattered efforts. The proposed network, therefore, will seek to promote the international exchange of relevant expertise, and it will reinforce the commitments and actions that single countries are currently taking to meet these objectives. For example, informative public events can be organised to promote particular support initiatives and to provide an opportunity for new members of the network to be presented. The network will promote health for senior citizens, disease prevention, senior mobility, safe free time for seniors, alimentary education, protection against new risks and dangers, as well as equity in the services necessary for seniors to adopt new information and communication technologies. In the case of retired academic members, the network will promote equality with respect to continuing use of digital technologies (particularly email), continuing access to research libraries, and the guaranteed ability for seniors to fund their own research programs and to deliver free seminars. The concept of shared mental models refers to the shared understanding among team members about how they should behave in different situations. This article aimed to develop a new shared mental model measure, specifically designed for the refereeing context. A cross-sectional study was conducted with three samples: national and regional football referees (n = 133), national football referees and assistant referees and national futsal referees (n = 277), and national futsal referees (n = 60). The proposed version of the Referee (...) Shared Mental Models Measure (RSMMM) has 13 items that are reflected on a single factor structure. The RSMMM presented good validity evidence both based on the internal structure and based on relations to other variables (presenting positive associations with team work engagement, team adaptive performance, and team effectiveness). Such promising psychometric properties point to an optimistic outlook regarding its use to measure shared mental models in futsal and football referee teams. -/- . (shrink)

Aworkshop was held August 26–28, 2015, by the Earth- Life Science Institute (ELSI) Origins Network (EON, see Appendix I) at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. This meeting gathered a diverse group of around 40 scholars researching the origins of life (OoL) from various perspectives with the intent to find common ground, identify key questions and investigations for progress, and guide EON by suggesting a roadmap of activities. Specific challenges that the attendees were encouraged to address included the following: What key (...) questions, ideas, and investigations should the OoL research community address in the near and long term? How can this community better organize itself and prioritize its efforts? What roles can particular subfields play, and what can ELSI and EON do to facilitate research progress? (See also Appendix II.) The present document is a product of that workshop; a white paper that serves as a record of the discussion that took place and a guide and stimulus to the solution of the most urgent and important issues in the study of the OoL. This paper is not intended to be comprehensive or a balanced representation of the opinions of the entire OoL research community. It is intended to present a number of important position statements that contain many aspirational goals and suggestions as to how progress can be made in understanding the OoL. The key role played in the field by current societies and recurring meetings over the past many decades is fully acknowledged, including the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life (ISSOL) and its official journal Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres, as well as the International Society for Artificial Life (ISAL). In 1988, J. Ivlev proposed some (non-normal) modal systems which are semantically characterized by four-valued non-deterministic matrices in the sense of A. Avron and I. Lev. Swap structures are multialgebras (a.k.a. hyperalgebras) of a special kind, which were introduced in 2016 by W. Carnielli and M. Coniglio in order to give a non-deterministic semantical account for several paraconsistent logics known as logics of formal inconsistency, which are not algebraizable by means of the standard techniques. Each swap structure induces naturally a (...) non-deterministic matrix. The aim of this paper is to obtain a swap structures semantics for some Ivlev-like modal systems proposed in 2015 by M. Coniglio, L. Fariñas del Cerro and N. Peron. Completeness results will be stated by means of the notion of Lindenbaum–Tarski swap structures, which constitute a natural generalization to multialgebras of the concept of Lindenbaum–Tarski algebras. A partir de los postulados de una concepción semántica de norma y su clasificación en reglas y principios, Robert Alexy ha enunciado una tesis fuerte de la separación, al concebir que entre ambos tipos de normas no solo existe una diferencia gradual, sino también cualitativa. En este contexto, los principios son descritos como mandatos de optimización, caracterizados por un cumplimiento gradual en atención a las posibilidades reales y jurídicas, y a través de la denominada técnica de la ponderación. A pesar (...) de las objeciones recibidas, la vigencia de esta tesis resulta incuestionable, sirviendo todavía de inspiración a las nuevas generaciones de juristas interesados en la Teoría del Derecho. En el presente capítulo se pretende exponer de manera sucinta pero precisa los postulados del principialismo alexyano, las críticas más recurrentes y sus posibles respuestas, para terminar con algunas notas interpretativas que persiguen contribuir a la continuación del camino trazado por el insigne profesor alemán. Bu çalışmanın amacı, okuma kültürünün geliştirilmesine yönelik aile farkındalık programının (OKGYAFP) çocukta okuma kültürü oluşturmaya yönelik aile yeterliliğine etkisini belirlemek ve ailelerin OKGYAFP deneyimlerinin okuma kültürü oluşturmaya yönelik yeterliliklerini nasıl değiştirdiğini keşfetmektir. Bu nedenle çalışmada karma yöntem araştırma desenlerinden açımlayıcı sıralı karma desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın nicel aşamasında öntest-sontest kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen tercih edilmiştir. Nitel aşamasında ise odak grup görüşmeleri yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın nicel boyutunun katılımcılarını Aydın ili Köşk ilçesinde bulunan bir devlet okulunun iki 2. sınıf şubesinin gönüllü velileri (n=30) (...) oluşturmuştur. Nitel boyutunun çalışma grubunu ise araştırmanın deney grubunda yer alan velilerden gönüllü 10 kişi oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Okuma Kültürü Oluşturmada Aile Yeterliliği Ölçeği ve görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Bu araştırmanın nicel verilerinin analizi için betimsel istatistiklerin yanı sıra tek yönlü kovaryans analizinden (ANCOVA) yararlanılmıştır. Nitel veriler ise içerik analizi yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre deney grubu velilerinin okuma kültürü oluşumunda aile yeterliliği son test puanlarının anlamlı düzeyde farklılaştığı görülmüştür. Ayrıca OKGYAFP’nin deney grubunu oluşturan veliler üzerinde okuma kültürü ediniminde aile yeterliliği noktasında yüksek etkiye sahip olduğu bulgusuna da ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda aileler programın okuma kültürü bağlamında farkındalık oluşturduğunu ifade etmiştir. Katılımcı ailelerin programın sonunda okuma kültürü oluşturmada aile yeterliliği düzeyleri ile programa ilişkin görüşlerinin tam olarak örtüştüğü de görülmüştür. (shrink)

FISIOLOGIA DA REPRODUÇÃO BOVINA -/- 3 – GESTAÇÃO -/- -/- INTRODUÇÃO -/- -/- O estabelecimento da gestação é o objetivo fundamental dos programas reprodutivos. Após a fertilização, o zigoto se divide e dá origem a embriões de duas, quatro, oito, dezesseis células, e no sétimo dia o embrião tem mais de 80 células. Entre os dias 16 e 18 do ciclo estral, o embrião se alonga e atinge 15 cm de comprimento. O estabelecimento da gestação depende da supressão da secreção (...) de PGF2α pelo embrião, que é realizada por meio da secreção de interferon-τ. Em vacas leiteiras, uma alta proporção de embriões morre antes do reconhecimento materno da gravidez. -/- Para evitar perdas embrionárias, é importante conhecer a fisiologia da gestação. Este capítulo descreve os principais processos fisiológicos que levam ao estabelecimento e manutenção da gestação e ao manejo da vaca prenhe. -/- -/- 3.1 Transporte de gametas -/- -/- Os gametas, óvulo e esperma, são definidos como células germinativas maduras que possuem um número haploide (n = 23) de cromossomos que, quando unidos, dão origem a um novo indivíduo geneticamente diferente de ambos os pais. -/- -/- 3.1.1 Transporte dos espermatozoides -/- -/- Os espermatozoides obtidos diretamente do testículo são funcionalmente imaturos, incapazes de fertilizar o óvulo. Durante sua permanência no epidídimo, os espermatozoides sofrem alterações na morfologia, mobilidade e metabolismo, o que lhes dá a capacidade de fertilização. No entanto, eles terão que passar algum tempo no trato genital feminino para que adquiram o estado ideal para fertilizar; processo conhecido como capacitação. -/- Durante a monta natural, a ejaculação ocorre na vagina e são depositados cerca de 5 x 109 de espermatozoides (volume ejaculado de três a cinco ml e concentração espermática de 1 x 109 a 1,2 x 109 por ml) suspensos no plasma seminal, este é basicamente constituído pelas secreções das vesículas seminais e da próstata. Após a ejaculação, o transporte dos espermatozoides é favorecido pelas contrações uterinas e vaginais que ocorrem durante e após a relação sexual. Nos primeiros minutos após a cópula, os espermatozoides já podem ser encontrados no oviduto, o que se deve às contrações do trato genital. Durante o transporte dos espermatozoides, a mobilidade individual é importante, já que apenas os espermatozoides com essa capacidade chegam ao local da fertilização. -/- O primeiro local para o estabelecimento de uma população de espermatozoides é a cérvix do útero, principalmente nas criptas, onde permanecem protegidos da fagocitose. É importante observar que apenas os espermatozoides móveis permanecem nas criptas; aqueles que estão mortos ou sem movimento são eliminados pelos fagócitos ou pelo movimento do muco cervical em direção a vagina. Embora uma população temporária de espermatozoides seja estabelecida no colo do útero, o reservatório funcional de espermatozoides está localizado na região distal do istmo. -/- As características do muco cervical são importantes para o transporte dos espermatozoides; assim, durante o estro e a ovulação, o muco fica mais aquoso, o que favorece a migração dos espermatozoides, enquanto na fase lútea o muco torna-se mais viscoso, dificultando sua movimentação. -/- Já no útero, o transporte de espermatozoides depende principalmente das contrações uterinas. Aqui, os espermatozoides ficam suspensos nas secreções uterinas, cuja função é promover sua viabilidade e transporte. As secreções uterinas contêm fagócitos que removem os espermatozoides mortos e imóveis, embora os espermatozoides normais também sejam removidos por esse meio. Algumas substâncias, como prostaglandinas e ocitocina, promovem o transporte. -/- O oviduto desempenha um papel muito importante no transporte e maturação dos gametas, bem como na fertilização e desenvolvimento embrionário inicial. As características das secreções do oviduto variam de acordo com a região do oviduto e o estágio do ciclo estral. Uma vez que os espermatozoides atingem o oviduto, eles são distribuídos em dois lugares. Alguns espermatozoides são imediatamente transportados para a região da ampola; esses são os primeiros que encontram o ovócito, mas sua capacidade de fertilização é limitada. O outro local de distribuição é a região caudal do istmo; aqui eles permanecem até que a ovulação seja iminente. Para que a fertilização ocorra, é necessário que o espermatozoide se estabeleça neste local por um período de seis a oito horas, antes da ovulação. Uma a duas horas, antes da ovulação, um movimento ativo do espermatozoide é observado em direção à região da ampola. -/- No oviduto, o transporte de espermatozoides depende de seu movimento, do fluido ovidutal e das contrações musculares. É comum que alguns espermatozoides continuem seu movimento e saiam pela fímbria. A viabilidade do espermatozoide de uma ejaculação varia de 24 a 48 horas. -/- -/- 3.1.2 Transporte do ovócito -/- -/- A ovulação é o processo pelo qual o ovócito é liberado. Este evento é desencadeado pela secreção de LH conhecida como pico de LH ovulatório ou pré-ovulatório. -/- Devido ao efeito de LH o cúmulos descola-se da parede folicular e começa a observar-se um adelgaçamento em uma pequena área da parede folicular, causada pela isquemia e pela ação de enzimas proteolíticas. Mais tarde, nesta área, uma pequena vesícula protuberante (estigma) se forma e eventualmente se quebra. Depois que o estigma é quebrado, o cúmulos que contém o ovócito junto com as células da granulosa. O ovócito é capturado pela fimbria; processo apoiado por movimentos dos cílios da mucosa e por contrações das pregas desta estrutura. Assim que o oócito é capturado, ele é transportado para a ampola. -/- 3.8 Manejo da vaca seca -/- -/- Em programas de manejo anteriores, a vaca seca recebia comida de pior qualidade e permanecia no esquecimento até o parto ocorrer. No entanto, os resultados dos estudos mostram que o período de seca é decisivo para que a vaca atinja um nível ótimo de produção e tenha um bom desempenho reprodutivo pós-parto. Por outro lado, o manejo correto no período seco reduz a incidência de doenças metabólicas no puerpério. O objetivo do período de seca é oferecer um descanso à vaca antes do parto, durante o qual o tecido mamário se regenera, o feto atinge seu crescimento máximo e a vaca atinge uma condição corporal adequada para enfrentar uma nova lactação. A duração recomendada do período de seca é de seis a oito semanas (60 dias). A involução do tecido da glândula mamária leva de duas a três semanas e um período semelhante é necessário para reiniciar a síntese do leite antes do parto. Assim, um período de seca de 60 dias é suficiente; entretanto, a duração desse período é questionada e tempos mais curtos foram propostos. Provavelmente, nos próximos anos, mais informações estarão disponíveis para apoiar a redução do período de seca. -/- Em termos de produção, o objetivo do manejo durante o período de seca é levar a vaca ao pico de lactação cinco a seis semanas após o parto, com produção máxima de leite. Estima-se que para cada kg de leite que aumenta no pico da lactação, ocorre um aumento de 120 kg ao longo da lactação. Para atingir este objetivo é necessário que a vaca tenha um consumo adequado de matéria seca após o parto; porém, três semanas antes do parto, a vaca reduz seu consumo em até 30%, para o qual é necessário estabelecer um manejo eficaz para promover um alto consumo de matéria seca durante a parte final do período de seca e durante as três primeiras semanas pós-parto (período de transição: três semanas antes e três após o parto). -/- A falta de capacidade de consumir as necessidades de matéria seca após o parto obriga a vaca a mobilizar suas reservas de gordura. Praticamente todas as vacas após o parto mobilizam suas reservas de gordura e perdem a condição corporal. A mobilização da gordura corporal causa degeneração gordurosa do fígado e é responsável por distúrbios metabólicos e retardo da atividade ovariana pós-parto. O grau de degeneração da gordura está relacionado à magnitude da mobilização da gordura corporal, que é diretamente dependente da capacidade de consumir matéria seca. Dessa forma, vacas com alto consumo de matéria seca no pós-parto, mobilizam menos gordura e, portanto, o dano ao fígado é menor. -/- O período de secagem é dividido em duas partes, a primeira compreende desde a secagem até duas semanas antes do parto; a segunda parte inclui as últimas duas semanas de gestação e é conhecida como período de desafio. -/- O período de desafio é decisivo para o desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo. Durante este período, uma dieta semelhante em ingredientes e forma deve ser oferecida à dieta que farão após o parto. Para facilitar esse manejo, as vacas deste grupo devem ser separadas do restante das vacas secas. -/- No período de seca, atenção especial deve ser dada para que as vacas não alcancem escores de condição corporal de quatro ou mais, uma vez que o excesso de gordura causa problemas metabólicos durante o puerpério, que afetam negativamente o comprometimento uterino e início da atividade ovariana pós-parto (figura 8). -/- -/- -/- Figura 8: Estágios fisiológicos e reprodutivos da vaca leiteira. Período de espera voluntário (PVE). -/- -/- 3.9 O período de transição -/- -/- O período de transição na vaca leiteira é três semanas antes e três após o parto (também conhecido como periparto). Nos últimos anos, esse tema tem merecido muitas pesquisas, pois o que for bem ou mal feito durante ele terá impacto na eficiência reprodutiva e na produção de leite. Durante o período de transição, a glândula mamária se prepara para a lactogênese, o feto cresce exponencialmente, a resposta imune é suprimida e o consumo de matéria seca diminui; além disso, o rúmen deve se adaptar à dieta recebida pelas vacas in natura (primeiras três semanas pós-parto), dieta caracterizada por alto teor de energia na forma de grãos. -/- Muitos distúrbios que se manifestam nas duas primeiras semanas pós-parto (hipocalcemia clínica e subclínica, cetose, retenção placentária, prolapso uterino, metrite, mastite, deslocamento do abomaso etc.), como os que se apresentam posteriormente (laminite, cistos ovarianos , endometrite e anestro) têm sua origem nos erros cometidos durante o período de transição. Em grande parte, os problemas estão relacionados à diminuição do consumo de matéria seca durante o período de transição; assim, o consumo diminui cerca de 30% durante as últimas três semanas de gestação, mas a maior parte da redução ocorre cinco a sete dias antes do parto. O manejo correto do período de transição tem como objetivo manter a normocalcemia, fortalecer o sistema imunológico, adaptar o rúmen a uma dieta rica em energia e aumentar a ingestão de matéria seca. Algumas recomendações gerais de manejo durante o período de transição são: separar as novilhas das vacas, ter comedouro suficiente para todos os animais, ter as mesmas características dos comedouros de vacas frescas e a dieta deve estar disponível 24 horas por dia (figuras 9 e 10). -/- -/- -/- Figura 10: O desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo das vacas depende em grande parte da condição corporal no momento do parto. Os espermatozoides devem permanecer no istmo e na região da junção útero-tubária por seis a oito horas antes da ovulação para obter uma alta taxa de fertilização. A viabilidade dos espermatozoides no útero é de 24 a 48 horas. A polispermia é efetivamente bloqueada nas primeiras 10 horas após a ovulação. Os blastômeros de embriões de duas, quatro e oito células são pluripotentes. A eclosão do embrião ocorre no oitavo dia. O tempo que o embrião leva para chegar ao útero é de três a quatro dias. Entre os dias 16 e 18 do ciclo, o embrião produz interferon-t, para bloquear a secreção de PGF2α. Entre os dias 17 e 18, o embrião se fixa ao endométrio. A medição da progesterona entre os dias 20-24 pós-infecção é 100% precisa na identificação de vacas não gestantes. A vaca deve atingir seu pico de lactação entre cinco e seis semanas após o parto. Para cada kg de leite que é aumentado no pico da lactação, um aumento de 120 kg é alcançado na lactação de 305 dias. Três semanas antes do parto, a vaca reduz seu consumo em até 30%. O período de transição inclui três semanas antes e três após o parto. As vacas ao parto não devem ter mais do que quatro pontos de condição corporal. Linguistics of saying consists in analyzing speech acts as the result of an act of knowing. Speaking subjects speak because they have something to say. Tthey say because they define themselves before the circumstance they are in. And this is possible because they are able to know. Speaking, then, is speaking, saying and knowing. In this sense there is a progressive determination. Knowing makes (...) possible saying, and saying determines speaking, or, in other words: speaking involves saying and knowing, and saying involves knowing. A language, on the contrary, is something coming from the outside, from the speech community, something offered to the speaking subject from the tradition in the technique of speaking. Exposed in 1948, within his masterpiece on the scope and limits of human knowledge, the epistemological tenets that Bertrand Russell regarded as fundamental elements in the construction of scientific knowledge, are still worthy of a detailed discussion today. Given the excellence of the author, it will not be surprising to see that Russell's gnoseologic postulates, even for the present scientific view, address some of the most controversial questions still to be solved in the theory of knowledge.

A lo largo del siglo XX, y en especial a partir del desarrollo de la física cuántica y de la dinámica no lineal, los conceptos de incertidumbre, impredictibilidad e indeterminación han sido fuente de gran confusión, pese a sus distintos significados y aplicaciones. Un somero análisis de las teorías que los emplean permite distinguirlos con suficiente claridad.

La termodinámica, se desarrolló en gran medida bajo el impulso de la Revolución Industrial, que ayudó a afianzar metodológicamente las seculares investigaciones sobre el calor y la temperatura. Como tal desarrollo se produjo a la sombra de la triunfante mecánica clásica —cuyos referentes físicos son notablemente distintos— y a causa de la carencia de herramientas formales adecuadas, durante mucho tiempo se admitió sin discusión que esta ciencia había de limitarse a los sistemas en equilibrio o muy cercanos a él. Philosophical discussions on cognition (ranging from computational and representational approaches to the 4E fra-mework), on the one hand, and those on sound and auditory per-ception, on the other, have hitherto remained apart. In this paper, the author addresses the concept of “auditory cognition”. While committing to the conceptual analysis of the latter, the author in-troduces the discussion of modality-specif ic approaches. Since the contributions made so far in the domain of the philosophy of sound and auditory perception are prone to (...) favor computational-repre-sentational approaches —e.g., the perceptual coherence model (Méndez-Martínez, 2022)—, the exploration of 4E possibilities will lay down a series of questions aimed to encourage future developers from that viewpoint. In that sense, the author explores conceptual entailments and connections between the genealogy of theories within the philosophy of sound and auditory perception, and the hypothesis of the extended cognition (EX). Natural selection is one of the fundamental keys of evolutionary biology, which is as much as saying of almost all life sciences. However, the effort to assess its true meaning has been involved in endless controversies almost from the beginning. The rethinking of natural selection through an abstract scheme with three ingredients - −population, environment and interaction between them− could significantly contribute to clarify this debate.

Experimental balance is usually understood as the control for the value of the conditions, other than the one under study, which are liable to affect the result of a test. We will discuss three different approaches to balance. ‘Millean balance’ requires to identify and equalize ex ante the value of these conditions in order to conduct solid causal inferences. ‘Fisherian balance’ measures ex post the influence of uncontrolled conditions through the analysis of variance. In ‘efficiency balance’ the value of the (...) antecedent conditions is decided ex ante according to the efficiency they yield in the estimation of the treatment outcome. Against some old arguments by John Worrall, we will show that in both Fisherian and efficiency balance there are good reasons to randomize the allocation of treatments, in particular when there is no agreement among experimenters as to the antecedent conditions to be controlled for. While scientific inquiry crucially relies on the extraction of patterns from data, we still have a far from perfect understanding of the metaphysics of patterns—and, in particular, of what makes a pattern real. In this paper we derive a criterion of real-patternhood from the notion of conditional Kolmogorov complexity. The resulting account belongs to the philosophical tradition, initiated by Dennett :27–51, 1991), that links real-patternhood to data compressibility, but is simpler and formally more perspicuous than other proposals previously defended in (...) the literature. It also successfully enforces a non-redundancy principle, suggested by Ladyman and Ross, that aims to exclude from real-patternhood those patterns that can be ignored without loss of information about the target dataset, and which their own account fails to enforce. In 2020, the European Union announced the award of the contract for the biometric part of the new database for border control, the Entry Exit System, to two companies: IDEMIA and Sopra Steria. Both companies had been previously involved in the development of databases for border and migration management. While there has been a growing amount of publicly available documents that show what kind of technologies are being implemented, for how much money, and by whom, there has been limited engagement (...) with digital methods in this field. Moreover, critical border and security scholarship has largely focused on qualitative and ethnographic methods. Building on a data feminist approach, we propose a transdisciplinary methodology that goes beyond binaries of qualitative/quantitative and opacity/transparency, examines power asymmetries and makes the labour of coding visible. Empirically, we build and analyse a dataset of the contracts awarded by two European Union agencies key to its border management policies – the European Agency for Large-Scale Information Systems (eu-LISA) and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). We supplement the digital analysis and visualisation of networks of companies with close reading of tender documents. In so doing, we show how a transdisciplinary methodology can be a device for making datafication ‘intelligible’ at the European Union borders. (shrink)

This paper proposes some guidelines for the undeveloped discussion of auditory epistemology. Auditory epistemology is an approach concerned with the perceptual basis for knowledge and belief, specifically around audition. The article pursues two goals. Firstly, it claims that addressing auditory perception from the viewpoint of epistemology is more fruitful than the discussion on phenomenology which has thus far dominated the debates in the literature on sound. Secondly, it elaborates a concrete proposal pertaining to the cooperation of sense-modalities. In so doing, (...) a model for “Perceptual Coherence” is suggested. Both Franz Brentano and Edmund Husserl addressed sound while trying to explain the inner consciousness of time and gave to it the status of a supporting example. Although their inquiries were not aimed at clarifying in detail the nature of the auditory experience or sounds themselves, they made some interesting observations that can contribute to the current philosophical discussion on sounds. On the other hand, in analytic philosophy, while inquiring the nature of sounds, their location, auditory experience or the audible (...) qualities and so on, the representatives of that trend of thought have remained silent about the depiction of sound and the auditory phenomena in the phenomenological tradition. The paper’s intention is to relate both endeavours, yet the perspective carried out is that of analytic philosophy and, thus, I pay special attention to conceptual analysis as a methodological framework. In this sense, I first explain what sound ontology is in the context of analytic philosophy and the views that it encompasses— namely, the Property View (PV), the Wave View (WV) and the Event View (EV)—. Secondly, I address the problems it entails, emphasising that of sound individuation. In a third section, I propose the possibly controversial conjunction of a “Brentano-Husserl Analysis of the Consciousness of Time” (for short “Brentano-Husserl analysis”) and outline the commonalities of both authors, without ignoring its discrepancies. My main focus is Husserl’s 1905 Vorlesungen zur Phänomenologie des Inneren Zeitbewusstseins. While addressing the Brentano-Husserl analysis, I elaborate on the problem of temporal and spatial extension (Raumlichkeit and Zeitlichkeit, respectively) of both consciousness and sound. Such comparison is a key one, since after these two developments, one can notice some theoretical movements concerning the shift of attention from sounds to the unity of consciousness, and how they mirror each other. After examining the controversial claims concerning the temporal and spatial extension of both consciousness and sound, I argue in the concluding paragraphs that while considering the accounts of sound ontology, the Brentano-Husserl analysis would probably endorse a Property View and that this could have interesting consequences for the issue of Sound Individuation. In the realm of the philosophy of sounds and auditory experience there is an ongoing discussion concerned with the nature of sounds. One of the contestant views within this ontology of sound is that of the Property View, which holds that sounds are properties of the sounding objects. A way of developing this view is through the idea of dispositionalism, namely, by sustaining the theory according to which sounds are dispositional properties (Pasnau 1999; Kulvicki 2008; Roberts 2017). That portrayal, however, (...) is not sufficient, as it has not inquired the metaphysical debates about dispositions beyond the conditional analysis. In this paper, I try to advance this view by including recent developments (for instance Bird 2007; Vetter 2015) in the field of dispositionalism and I analyse whether this new version can sort out known and new objections to Property View. The Texas borderlands have come to be increasingly important in the historical literature and in public opinion for the way that the region shapes national thought on race, borders, and ethnicity. With this increasing importance, it is pressing to examine the history of these issues in the region so that they may be accurately and insightfully deployed. This article contributes to the existing scholarship with a close discursive analysis of race in the booster materials, 1904-1941. The booster materials forge a (...) notion of race relations that borrows from tropes common across the West but is also informed by Jim Crow and the unique demands of the region. The booster materials forward a notion of race that is largely unique in Western boosterism, positing only two major characters, Mexicans and white Northerners. The figure of ‘the Mexican’ is drawn more as a part of nature than human society in that it shares the fundamental characteristics of the land, animals, and rivers of the region. Nature in the region is depicted as an adventitious, disorderly, and wasteful body that calls out for northern discipline. The ‘Northerners’ are figured as the ones who, through applying discipline to the natural resources of the area (land, water, and Mexicans) can bring reason, fertility, and profitable connection to the national economy. The consequences of this racial division are further explored in the article as they play out in schooling, religion, justice, beauty, leisure, and sport. (shrink)

This paper addresses the problem of sound individuation (SI) and its connection to sound ontology (SO). It is argued that the problems of SI, such as aspatiality, extreme individuation, indexical perplexity and duration puzzles are due to SO’s uncertainties. Besides, I describe the views in SO, including the wave view (WV), the property view (PV), and the event view (EV), as Casey O’Callaghan defends it. According to O’Callaghan, EV offers clear standards to individuate sounds. However, this claim is countered by (...) the consideration that any view could also defend the standards in SO, and thus, EV does not solve any of the problems mentioned above. As a way of showing the difficulties inherited by sound’s inner ontology, the problem of its linguistic representation is also addressed. The problem of SI can be developed within the frame of the philosophy of language and, specifically, regarding the discussion about mass vs count-­sortal terms. Is the term sound a mass or a count­-sortal? It is shown that, for reasons pertaining SO, the decision regarding the case of sound as a mass or count-­sortal term remains open. SI is, thus, covered from the SO to the philosophy of language. (shrink)

As ciências médicas, biomédicas, humanas e sociais têm avançado de forma frenética nos últimos anos. Com isso, se faz cada vez mais necessário o debate ético que visa contemplar o respeito à dignidade humana, animal e ao meio ambiente. A bioética se dedica a esse debate e se propõe a estendê-lo a setores não acadêmicos, como sociedades de proteção dos animais, dos direitos humanos e até grupos religiosos. Essa diversidade de opiniões não só é interessante, mas necessária, uma vez que (...) os valores praticados em uma sociedade provêm de uma construção social cujos blocos fundamentais têm origem na família e nos diversos grupos sociais nos quais os indivíduos estão inseridos desde o seu nascimento. A proposta deste livro é fomentar esse debate, fornecendo conceitos e visões sobre temas selecionados da pesquisa e da prática médica, biotecnológica e de áreas correlatas. Em um contexto mundial de intolerância política, social, étnica e de gênero, oportunidades de debate também possuem um papel social de auxiliar no desenvolvimento consciente da cidadania e do respeito ao próximo. Sobretudo, o debate nos faz enxergar o outro como parelho, ainda que cada um possua as suas especificidades, opiniões e histórias de vida. (shrink)

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) as cooperative learning teaching approach to improve students’ mathematical cognition. A quantitative research design via experimental design using one group pretest and post-test was employed. This only concentrated on specific students’ processing speed and working memory and included 67 grade 9 students from a public school in the Philippines. The findings showed that the components of TAI were moderately effective under the placement test, effective under the teams, (...) teaching group, student creative, team study, fact test and team score than whole class and highly effective under team recognition, Furthermore, there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores in each completed stage, and TAI approach is an effective strategy in improving the mathematical cognition of students. This study argues that TAI approach may be utilized in mathematics classrooms to improve the mathematical cognition of students. The gravity of the lessons or topics may be put into consideration to balance the learning and performances of students. (shrink)

since the 20th century bodybuilding has been an object of study that interests and challenges researchers in the sociology of sport (see Conquet, 2014 - Tajrobehkar, 2016 - Wellman, 2020) and, recently, in the philosophy of sport (see Aranyosi, 2017 - Madej, 2021 - Worthen, 2016). However, many of its problems are little known in the orthodox philosophical literature. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to contribute from STS studies to the posing and discussion of the central ethical and (...) social problems of bodybuilding by contributing to the philosophy of sport or the philosophy of body techniques. Therefore, I will plant the following problems in relation to bodybuilding: gender and sexism; racism, ableism and eugenics; and lastly, fatphobia. Finally, I propose that many of these problems are generated from the indiscriminate use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) within this sport subculture. In this sense, a precautionary framework (epistemic values, moral values, hormonal benefit principle and sports precautionary principle) is proposed from STS studies with the aim of regulating their use, avoiding adverse effects in individuals who are not professional bodybuilders. -/- . The renewed interest in concepts and their role in psychological theorizing is partially motivated by Machery’s claim that concepts are so heterogeneous that they have no explanatory role. Against this, pluralism argues that there is multiplicity of different concepts for any given category, while hybridism argues that a concept is constituted by a rich common representation. This article aims to advance the understanding of the hybrid view of concepts. First, we examine the main arguments against hybrid concepts and conclude that, (...) even if not successful, they challenge hybridism to find a robust criterion for concept individuation and to show an explanatory advantage for hybrid concepts. Neutral monism claims that both mind and matter are categories derived froma single underlying realit y that is univocally identified with none of them. In this paper atheoretical outline is presented from the neutral-monism perspective on the different configurations of reality referred to as “mind” and “matter”, while also discussing its consequences and the approaches it could give raise.

This article intends to analyze the performance and the efficiency of companies and to identify the key factors that may explain it. It was selected a sample with 15 enterprises: 7 Portuguese and 8 Ukrainian ones, belonging to several industries. Financial and non-financial data was collected for 6 years, during the period of 2009 to 2014. Research questions that guided this work were: Are the enterprises efficient/profitable? What factors influence enterprises’ efficiency/performance? Is there any difference between Ukrainian and Portuguese enterprises’ (...) efficiency/performance, which factors have more influence? Which industrial sector is represented by more efficient/profitable enterprises? The main results showed that in average enterprises were efficient with low level of profitability. According to gained results several indicators were highlighted so that companies would pay more attention to them. (shrink)

Despite the widespread assumptions on the compatibility between non-relativistic quantum mechanics and special relativity, there still remains a considerable amount of unresolved problems to which few authors explicitly pay attention. Most of them involve the aim of coherently achieving a relativistic description of quantum collapses and quantum entanglements. These processes seem to challenge our present picture of the physical world in terms of space-time structures.

El escepticismo antiguo es una corriente filosófica tan controversial como interesante. En este artículo se analiza su particular método investigativo como forma de vida y las objeciones que le han hecho los dogmáticos a lo largo de la historia. Using the method of Descriptive Experience Sampling, some subjects report experiences of thinking that do not involve words or any other symbols [Hurlburt, R. T., and C. L. Heavey. 2006. Exploring Inner Experience. Amsterdam: John Benjamins; Hurlburt, R. T., and S. A. Akhter. 2008. “Unsymbolized Thinking.” Consciousness and Cognition 17 : 1364–1374]. Even though the possibility of this unsymbolized thinking has consequences for the debate on the phenomenological status of cognitive states, the phenomenon is still insufficiently examined. This paper analyzes (...) the main properties of unsymbolized thinking and advances an explanation of its origin. According to our analysis, unsymbolized thoughts appear as propositional states, that is, they are experienced as compositional conceptual phenomena, with semantic and syntactic features analogous to those of the contents of utterances. Rules are meant to apply equally to all within their jurisdiction. However, some rules are frequently broken without consequence for most. These rules are only occasionally enforced, often at the discretion of a third-party observer. We propose that these rules—whose violations are frequent, and enforcement is rare—constitute a unique subclass of explicitly codified rules, which we call ‘phantom rules’ (e.g., proscribing jaywalking). Their apparent punishability is ambiguous and particularly susceptible to third-party motives. Across six experiments, (N = 1440) we validated (...) the existence of phantom rules and found evidence for their motivated enforcement. First, people played a modified Dictator Game with a novel frequently broken and rarely enforced rule (i.e., a phantom rule). People enforced this rule more often when the “dictator” was selfish (vs. fair) even though the rule only proscribed fractional offers (not selfishness). Then we turned to third person judgments of the U.S. legal system. We found these violations are recognizable to participants as both illegal and commonplace (Experiment 2), differentiable from violations of prototypical laws (Experiments 3) and enforced in a motivated way (Experiments 4a and 4b). Phantom rule violations (but not prototypical legal violations) are seen as more justifiably punished when the rule violator has also violated a social norm (vs. rule violation alone)—unless the motivation to punish has been satiated (Experiment 5). The structuralist reconstruction of the metabolic biochemistry here presented is a more complete and revised version than the one presented in Donolo, Federico & Lorenzano (2006). This version, as the previous one, continues with the reconstructive task initiated by César Lorenzano (2002), but advances further on those elements which remained pendent of reconstruction: applications subsequent to the paradigmatic one, for being these “too diversified and numerous” (p. 210).In line with which is said before, the objective of this new reconstruction is (...) to make the theoretical network of the biochemistry wider, in order to be able to capture the many successful applications (paradigmatic examples or exemplars) which appear in modern university textbooks. In order to accomplish this, major conceptual precisions are being introduced which will have repercussions in a modification and increased complexity of the fundamental law implicit in the text books, but still conserving the previous basic idea. Because of all this we can say that the present article goes further into the reconstruction task of the metabolic biochemistry theory. (shrink)

Dysmenorrhea, or menstrual pain, is regularly suffered by 45 to 95% of menstruating women. Despite its prevalence, and despite the philosophical importance of pain as a general phenomenon, dysmenorrhea has been all but completely overlooked in contemporary analytic philosophy of mind. This paper aims at rectifying this situation. We single out three properties of what is often considered the paradigmatic case of painful experience, what we call injury-centered pains, and argue that dysmenorrhea does not have any of them, and hence (...) that it does not neatly conform to the injury-centered model of pain.
